With Christmas fast approaching, the season of goodwill is the perfect time to donate to a cause that is very special to the local community.
Embracing this sentiment is Henfield resident, Susan Swan, aged 71 who has donated £500 on behalf of company Amway to support the good work and tireless commitment of St Barnabas House, a hospice located in Worthing, West Sussex.
St Barnabas House has been providing hospice care for local people and their families for over 40 years, both at the hospice and in patients’ own homes. Their charity shop in Henfield, West Sussex, raises money from the sales of donated items, which go towards care costs.
Susan has been a supporter of the charity since May 2007, when the charity first opened its retail shop on Henfield high street. Susan works as a volunteer every Thursday morning at shop, and for the rest of the week, runs her own direct-selling enterprise as an Amway Business Distributor.
Susan was one of many Amway Business Distributors across Europe who was given the opportunity to apply for a monetary donation from Amway, one of the leading family-owned consumer goods companies worldwide that sells high quality products in the categories of beauty, wellness and home care through independent distributors.
The 2016 initiative* – ‘One by One Amway Volunteering Campaign’ that is about helping people live better lives – has awarded financial donations to 65 Amway Business Distributors across Europe for their volunteering initiatives this December. The criterion was to demonstrate the impact and role each Distributor plays to improve their own communities.
Despite the tough competition, Susan’s application stood out and General Manager, Andrew Smith from Amway UK Ltd is delighted to see Susan be one of three candidates in the UK rewarded for their selfless charitable efforts.
He says: “Community is a word that is very important to our business. Our Amway Business Distributors establish strong roots in their own home town and build up their own enterprise by reaching out to individuals seeking our quality products. Individuals like Susan really stand out because they genuinely want to play an active role and make a difference on a local level. Susan carves out time from her busy schedule each week to support those in need and her application really struck a chord with the judging panel.”
Susan’s reflects on her application success: “I really enjoy volunteering and meeting new people, so when St Barnabas House announced that they were opening a retail shop in 2007, I jumped at the chance to help. It is important to play our small part when we can and for me, St Barnabas House really resonated as a cause as it brings much needed support and services to the region.
“We have a great team here in the shop, guided by Kylie Yates, the shop manager, so it doesn’t really feel like work because it’s such a friendly place to be.”
Jan Harper, Head of Retail at St Barnabas said: “We’d like to thank Amway for their very generous donation. It is thanks to the generosity of businesses and individuals in our local community that we can continue to provide our specialist care services”.
